Why Tucson palms need yearly attention

Date palms, fan palms and Mexican fan palms are common in older Tucson neighborhoods and newer subdivisions alike. Each year a palm grows new fronds from the top while the oldest ones die and hang down around the trunk. Left alone, they form a thick, dry “skirt.” Many palms also push out heavy flower and seed stalks that drop fruit on patios and gravel.

Monsoon season makes timing matter. The National Weather Service defines the monsoon as June 15 through September 30, and NWS Tucson says thunderstorm gusts in Arizona almost always exceed 40 mph. Dead fronds and seed stalks are what the wind pulls loose first.

How palms should be pruned: University of Arizona guidance

From UA Cooperative Extension publication AZ2021, “Arizona Landscape Palms and their Management.”

  • Prune once a year, in summer. Routine annual pruning is often scheduled in summer after the flower stalks have emerged, so the fronds and the flower or fruit stalks come off in one visit.
  • Follow the nine-and-three rule. Avoid removing living fronds above the horizontal — no higher than the nine and three o’clock positions on the palm’s head.
  • Don’t over-prune. UA says palms that are consistently over-pruned develop weakness and often break in the wind. Removing green leaves is strongly discouraged.
  • Don’t skin the trunk. Leave the trunk alone rather than shaving off the old frond bases.
  • Wait out the cold. Fronds browned by a freeze should come off only after the risk of cold has passed. NOAA normals put Tucson’s median last spring freeze on February 5.

The look many homeowners know as a “pineapple” or tight “hurricane cut” removes green fronds well above horizontal. It may look tidy for a while, but it works against UA’s advice. When you compare quotes, ask each company exactly which fronds it plans to remove.

Timing your palm trim around the monsoon

Because UA recommends pruning after flower stalks emerge, many Tucson homeowners book palm work in early summer, around the start of the monsoon on June 15. That one visit can clear dead fronds and seed stalks before the wind does. Companies get busy in that window, so asking for quotes in late spring gives you time to compare. Our monsoon yard prep guide lists the other jobs worth doing before the storms.

If a palm was browned by a winter freeze, let it be until the cold risk has passed. NOAA counts about 11.7 nights a year at or below 32 °F at Tucson International Airport, so frost damage does happen. Cutting off browned fronds too early can expose the palm’s growing point to the next cold night.

Safety at height

Palm trimming at height is specialized work. Tall palms are usually trimmed from a lift or by a climber, and the dead skirt can be heavy. Ask how the company does it safely, ask about insurance and experience, and get the scope in writing. Arizona’s contractor law exempts tree maintenance, and no state license for tree or palm trimming was found. ISA certification is a voluntary private credential; verify it at isa-arbor.com.

What palm trimming costs

ServiceTypical cost
Palm trimming, per tree$329–$988 (national; varies with height)
Tree trimming, for comparisonabout $112 small, $444 medium, $904 large tree

Typical ranges from published cost guides (2026) — estimates, not quotes. Several palms in one visit, easy access for a lift, and haul-away included or not will all move the number. See the Tucson landscaping prices page and its calculator for a rough range.

Shade trees need a different approach — see tree trimming in Tucson and our guide to pruning mesquite and palo verde. Fronds and seed debris can also be handled as part of a yard cleanup.

Frequently asked questions

When should palm trees be trimmed in Tucson?

University of Arizona Extension (AZ2021) says routine annual palm pruning is often scheduled in summer, after the flower stalks have emerged, so fronds and flower or fruit stalks come off in one visit. Fronds browned by a freeze should be removed only after the risk of cold has passed. Tucson's median last spring freeze is February 5.

What is the nine-and-three rule for palms?

Picture the palm's head as a clock face. University of Arizona Extension advises against removing living fronds above the horizontal line, which means no higher than the nine and three o'clock positions. Fronds hanging below that line can come off. Taking green fronds above it, sometimes called a hurricane cut, weakens the palm over time.

How much does palm tree trimming cost?

Published cost guides (2026) put palm trimming at about $329 to $988 per tree. That is a national figure; no Tucson-specific palm figure was found. Height drives most of the price, along with how many dead fronds and seed stalks have built up and whether debris is hauled away. These are estimates, not quotes. Compare written quotes from local companies.

Is it bad to over-prune a palm tree?

Yes. University of Arizona Extension says palms that are consistently over-pruned develop weakness and often break in the wind, and it strongly discourages removing green leaves. In Tucson, where monsoon gusts often top 40 mph, a palm stripped to a few top fronds is not the safer choice. Ask for dead fronds and stalks only, plus green fronds hanging below horizontal.

Can I trim my own tall palm tree?

Short palms with fronds you can reach from the ground are a homeowner job for many people. Palm trimming at height is specialized work, and it is often done from a lift or by a climber. If your palm is tall, compare quotes from companies that do it routinely and ask how the company does the work safely before you hire.
